Why Does a Chalazion Keep Coming Back?

A recurring chalazion can be frustrating. Many people assume it is just a random eyelid bump, but when a chalazion keeps coming back, there is usually an underlying reason. In many cases, the oil glands in the eyelid are becoming blocked again and again, which allows inflammation to return.

What a Chalazion Actually Is

A chalazion is a lump that forms when one of the meibomian glands in the eyelid gets clogged. These glands normally produce oil that helps support a healthy tear film. When the gland cannot drain properly, the trapped material can trigger swelling and inflammation.

Unlike a stye, a chalazion is not always painful. It may start as mild eyelid tenderness, then become a firmer bump that lingers for weeks.

Why Chalazia Tend to Return

If a chalazion keeps coming back, the gland itself may still not be functioning well. Even if the bump shrinks, the blockage can remain. Some patients are also more likely to develop repeated eyelid inflammation because of chronic lid disease or skin conditions.

Common reasons a chalazion may return include:

•          Meibomian gland dysfunction

•          Blepharitis, or ongoing eyelid inflammation

•          Oily skin or rosacea

•          Incomplete drainage of the original blocked gland

•          Poor eyelid hygiene

•          Frequent eye rubbing or touching the eyelids

The Role of Blepharitis and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Two of the most common causes of recurrent chalazia are blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction. Blepharitis causes inflammation along the eyelid margins, while meibomian gland dysfunction affects how the oil glands produce and release oil.

When these conditions are not addressed, the glands can continue to clog. That is why warm compresses may help temporarily, but the bump can still return if the underlying issue is still there.

When It May Be Time for an Eye Exam

A chalazion that comes back in the same spot should be evaluated. Recurrent eyelid bumps can sometimes point to chronic gland problems that need more than home care. If the area stays swollen, causes irritation, affects vision, or does not improve, it is a good idea to have it examined. We look at the eyelid structure, gland function, and signs of inflammation to determine why the chalazion is recurring and what treatment may help reduce the chances of it returning.

How Treatment Can Help Prevent Another Chalazion

Treatment depends on the cause. Some patients benefit from consistent eyelid hygiene and warm compresses, while others need more targeted care for blepharitis or gland dysfunction. In some cases, advanced in-office treatments may also be recommended to address stubborn gland blockage, reduce inflammation, and improve how the eyelid glands function.
